Is it normal to smell gas when cooking with a gas stove?
I just moved into an apartment that uses a gas stove. It's kind of an old stove, but when I cook the smell of gas is kinda overwhelming. Is my stove pushing out to much gas or what? Are you supposed to be able to smell the gas? One of the burners I just tested ticked about 8 or 9 times. One of them took a little longer and another took a little less.

- How many times does it tick before it ligths?
- It might need cleaning. Call maintenance or landlord.
- Cleaning has already been suggested and I think that may be your problem, or your problem may be a result of cleaning. There are mix vents in your stove that when you turn on the gas it is mixed with air and sent to the burner. If the vent has been closed a little during cleaning it would enrich the mixture not burning all the gas at the burner. you can piddle with it, or you can get hold of the owner or manager and have them get someone to set it for you. Also, if it were dirty, it might cause the same problem.
- A slight aroma of gas is normal, however, you should look at the color of the flame. A bluish flame color means that the mixture is correct between the "air/ fuel ratio". A yellow flame can be not enough air being mixxed with the fuel. There are 2 types of gas stoves, natural gas and propane. There are different orifices for the two types of gas. If someone runs a stove set up for propane on natural gas or visa versa, the mixture will be incorrect and a gas smell will occure. The oven and all burners mix the fuel at the point of ignition. If there is any dust, dirt, cobwebs at the mixing point, there will not be the right amount of air at the burners to mix correctly, that can give you a yellow flame. Make sure the air passages are clear and the orrifice is the right type for the gas you are using. Working right should have yellow flame at the bottom third and blue the other 2 thirds. There is also a regulator to meter the amount of flow for the gas. Make sure all the air mixing passages are clear. If all clear and the orifice is correct, call the gas company. You don't want a fire due to a leak. If you ever smell gas and the stove isn't on, leave the house immediatly and call the gas company from a neighbors house.
- If you smell gas there is a leak, call landlord and gas company at once. With reported leaks the gas company will be at your home within the hour. They don't want an explosion
- Remember they add that smell to the gas so you can smell it. Probably your tank is low
